Most modern boilers are condensing heating boiler and a combination gas fired boiler is of this form. The benefit of a combi heating boiler is that it can heat up water when needed and for this reason they are very popular.
Before you buy a combi gas fired boiler you should have an set up audit to ensure it can be fitted in your house. The heating fitter will ensure that your proposed fitting complies with the latest building regulations. It is sometimes more difficult to install a condensing rather than a non-condensing heating boiler for several reasons.
The exhaust gases from the flue tend to be not as hot and hence less buoyant than for an aging boiler type as a result they often condense very quickly and form an easily seen plume. areas near to the flue outlet are often subject to surface wetting, your neighbour’s home can also be impacted with this process in the worst case scenario the exhaust plume can impact people going by.
Your existing flue may not be acceptable for a modern condensing heating boiler requirements. To overcome this the flue might need to be changed. You cannot share a condensing gas fired boiler flue with any other non-condensing gas appliance.
The installation will also need to take into account the requirement for an external drain point for the liquid condensation which develops inside the gas fired boiler.
Do not despair, most of these fitting problems can easily be overcome. A good installer will know of these cures and can advise you on the best approach. Whilst some of these fixes will add to the fitting cost you will then need to setoff these against the reduced lifespan operating costs of the condensing heating boiler.
It is not all doom and gloom however and there are options for the set up. A change of location often results from the new set up requirements. Particular examples are where a condensing gas boiler is to replace an open flue or back gas boiler. An external flue is often missing from the set up of these older gas fired boiler types.
It is acceptable to install a gas boiler in any room other than the principal living room. fitting of a gas boiler in the attic is often seen in addition to the more common positioning in the kitchen or utility room.
A boiler can be set up in the attic as long as the system is sealed. Access to the attic has to be provided through a lower down ladder attached to the loft hatch. Boarded flooring will be called for to facilitate access to the gas boiler and sufficient lighting is it essential. This will allow a plumber to get access to the heating boiler for maintenance and servicing.
