Gas central heating is the best way of getting ready for when winter approaches with its longer nights and freezing temperatures. And for keeping your house cosy and warm, you need a good, safe and reliable central heating system, not one that breaks down when the first freeze appears.
Central heating systems, which basically comprise of a set of heating radiators, boiler and pipework, can be segregated into two distinct classes, pumped systems and vented systems.
Popularly used are pumped systems which comprise of a main feed and expansion water tank that heats up and transmits the heat through pipework to secondary heaters (heating radiators). The expansion tank will always allow for any water expansion that may occur as it gets hot.
The second type of heater is composed of a sealed system without a central component that is part of the central heating radiator. It’s basically closed, so there is really no need for any water tanks and the space they require. A sealed gas central heating system removes the risk of water leakage, airlock formation and pipe freeze (a common problem in the harsh winters of countries like Russia).
Do I really need a central heating system to heat my home?.
One of the greatest advantages of gas central heating is its capability to increase the temperature inside a home or office very quickly without creating any noticeable effects in the air immediately surrounding you. Electric fires, gas and storage heaters were the types used in the old days. However, these were not ideal as they emitted an odour and affected the condition of the air, drying it out.
The central heating systems are free from all these drawbacks but they need regular maintenance to keep them operating reliably. In many houses, these systems are not used during the summer, but as soon as the wintertimes set in, they are intensely used; this should not be done. Instead it is advocated that you gradually bring them into use during autumn so that if you spot any problem you can quickly contact an engineer.
It should also be noted that some central heating systems allow air or dirt into them, so yearly draining is required. The best way to do this is to place a bucket underneath the drain valve and slowly open it to release the water, but just make sure that no more air or dirt is making its way in.
