Shrink your gas consumption

The newspapers are full of reasons why we should contract energy use. Ever increasing energy costs make it critical to get the most out of your heating boiler and central heating system. You may be surprised to acknowledge that up to fifty percent of your energy costs will be related to your gas heating system. If you want to contract your energy charges read on as we have outlined some actions you can take.

switch off gas boilers in areas where you do not need it :
Turn off the metal radiator in any rooms which are not used such as the guest room or utility room. There are no drawbacks in not heating rooms which are not used, but there is an advantage in reducing the gas costs to heat your home. closing the door to these rooms will also stop warm air leaking into them and chilled air flowing out.

switch off a fire if you are using the gas heating system :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically controlled radiator valves and rise the temperature setting. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, whilst an electric fire appears to give immediate heat it is not as efficient as the gas heating system in heating the room.

Eliminate drafts with insulation
Draughts bring chilled air into your home wasting energy you have already paid for. Doors are often regions where chilled air leaks in so use approved entrance door insulation. Block cracks in door and window frames with a foam based sealant. These type of gaps happen often in older homes as the foundations settle. The flame from a wax candle can help you to see invisible drafts as it flutters when they are present.

Ensure you are wearing warm clothing indoors :
Putting on incremental clothing or just being active for a while will mean that you get warmer without switching up the heating thermostat. A ten% reduction in your gas use can easily be achieved by reducing your room temperature by 1°.

Temperature can be controlled by using your drapes :
The sun can be used to heat your home in the wintertime by keeping curtains open on the side of the home where it is shining. Your windows can be the cause of a lot of heat loss at night as external temperatures decrease. This heat loss can be reduced if you close the drapes, you can save a considerable amount of money over time with this tactic. Thick drapes are greater at stopping heat loss than thin ones.

The last advice for cutting your bills :
If your central heating system has a hot water cylinder this must be insulated. A cylinder which is not insulated will quickly lose its heat and cause you to pay to heat the hot water once again.

Radiators warm the wall at the rear of them and this heat loss can be decreased if you put shiny foil behind the radiators.
