Gas central heating systems, which basically comprise of a set of central heating radiators, boiler and pipework, can be segregated into two distinct classes, pumped systems and vented systems.
Pumped systems are more frequent, they have a feed and an expansion tank, another hot water tank is the core of the system, it stores hot water as it heats up and then uses the pipes to transfer heat to the radiators. The expansion tank does allow for any water expansion that may occur.
The vented system on the other hand is a sealed system where there is no core heating. No water tanks are required because the system is closed. Chief advantages of vented systems are: there is no risk of leaking water tank; major problems like air locks are also not associated with such systems; furthermore, they are specifically useful in cold countries because there is no risk of freezing pipes.
Do I really need a gas central heating system to heat my house?.
The simple answer is that it will allow you to heat your entire home or office quickly without compromising the air quality. Before the gas central heating system came into existence, other heaters like electric and storage heaters were used to keep the house warm or even coal fires. However these heaters had a odour around them and they also affected the surrounding air, making it less pleasant as an interior environment.
The gas central heating systems are free from all these drawbacks but they need regular maintenance to keep them functioning reliably. A lot of houses switch them off during the warm summer months and as soon as a cold snap hits, they then switch them on, this should not be done. Instead, you should start using the central heating system during the autumn season so that if any problem comes to the fore, you can call the engineer and get it rectified before the winter.
It is also important to remember that most household central heating systems allow in dust or air, thus requiring regular drainage. The easiest way to do this is to gently open the valve and allow any water to fall into a bucket placed underneath.
